The podcast is in Dutch. Below you will find the core of the conversation, with figures you can use for your own fleet.

Three charging locations, three tariffs, three departments

An electric company car charges in three places. Each place has its own tariff, and in larger companies each invoice ends up with a different department.

On the company siteUsually the cheapestThe cost often sits with facilities.

At homeThe biggest savingReimbursed via HR or payroll.

On the roadThe most expensiveThe charging card sits with the fleet manager. This is where the biggest gain lies

The result: nobody sees the total charging cost. Two identical cars with the same mileage can have very different energy bills, purely because of the driver’s charging behaviour.

Fuel cards were negotiated down to the tenth of a cent. Today charging costs are barely managed. Most companies are mainly glad there is a solution to charge at all.

The figures from the conversation

At 25,000 km per year€1,300 to €1,400Difference between 100% public and 100% home charging

Home charge pointLess than 2 yearsPayback time, based on consumption only

Customer with 500+ cars€5,000 to €10,000Recurring saving per quarter thanks to charging data

Even in the most expensive scenario, where an employee charges only at public stations, an electric car is cheaper to run than a petrol car. Charging at home and on site widens the gap considerably. Read more about these price differences in our article on the hidden costs of public charging for fleets.

A home charge point for everyone? Not always

A company with two sites recently asked us: do we give everyone a home charge point, or nobody? The figures gave a different answer.

Site 1Own high-voltage substationCharging at less than 20 cents per kWh. A home charge point never pays for itself here.

Site 2Office with public car parkCharging at 80 cents per kWh. A home charge point pays for itself in less than a year.Home charging pays off

That is why we always start with an analysis of the fleet and charging behaviour, not with a product. Mileage, the options on site and the employee’s profile determine the best solution.

Three levers to manage your charging costs

01

Measure every charging session, at every location

Our data shows that 80% of employees with a home charge point do more than 80% of their charging at home. Excellent. But there are also employees who received a home charge point and still almost always use an expensive fast charger. Without data you do not see that.

How to go about it: bring home, site and on-the-road charging together in one overview. With Certitool you see this at three levels: employees with and without a home charger, the most used charge points and their cost, and per employee whether public charging costs stay limited.

02

Use your car policy as a management tool

Employees with a home charge point need less budget on their charging card. A lower budget for that group naturally steers towards home charging. And employees who are spoken to about expensive charging behaviour change it in nine out of ten cases. More tips in our article on drafting an internal charging policy.

How to go about it: link the charging card budget to the employee’s profile, not to one fixed amount for everyone.

03

Bring your employees along

The employee does not sign the contract, but does decide where charging happens. Questions about the capacity tariff sometimes mean a home charge point is barely used. Smart charging prevents the company car from raising the peak at home.

How to go about it: organise an information session at the start of electrification, so every employee knows how charging and reimbursement work.

Already have charging infrastructure? We also analyse installations not fitted by Certipower.

Have your charging costs analysed

Two examples from practice

A consultancy firm with 50 to 60 cars. The electric cars had already been ordered, home charging was not yet arranged. In a short time we drew up and rolled out a plan. Result: every employee had a home charge point before their car was delivered.

A company with five pool cars. The plan was to charge on site, but without a high-voltage substation the available power was too limited. After analysing the drivers’ profiles, home charging turned out to be the best and cheapest solution.

How Certipower gives you that insight

We evolved from installer to partner that gives companies insight into their full charging cost. From advice to installation, management and reporting.

InstallAt the employee’s home, on the company site and on the road.

MeasureConsumption per user and per location, without estimates.

Split billingYour employee is reimbursed for home consumption every month, outside payroll. How split billing works

CertitoolInsight into what electric driving really costs: per group, per location and per employee.

Read more about our approach under Fleet and HR solutions.
