Yet according to Fluvius, tens of thousands of charging stations in Flanders are still unregistered.

In March 2026, 5,000 people registered their charging station with Fluvius in a single day, after a call from the grid operator. This guide covers everything: why it is required, who it applies to, what you need and how to do it step by step in Mijn Fluvius. Living in Brussels or Wallonia? The obligation applies there too, with your own grid operator: see below.

June 2021Registration obligation in forceEvery private charging station in Flanders must be registered.

End of 2023End of the grace periodSince then you actually risk a fine.

Today€117.68 fineCharging stations from before 2021 must also be registered.

Mandatory since 2021, yet widely ignored

Since June 2021, every private charging station in Flanders must be registered with Fluvius. The same obligation applies in Brussels and Wallonia, with the grid operator for your area. The obligation is similar to the rules for solar panels or a home battery. Even if your charging station was already in use before 2021, you still have to register it.

Reality lags far behind the law. In Flanders just over 70,000 charging stations are registered, while according to Fluvius the real number is probably twice as high. Tens of thousands of people in Flanders are therefore in breach, usually without realising it.

Why the grid operator wants to know

The reason is the electricity grid. An electric car almost doubles the electricity consumption of an average household. If five electric cars in one street suddenly charge at the same time in the evening, consumption peaks sharply. If the grid operator does not see those peaks coming, voltage can drop locally or the grid can become overloaded.

The registration obligation is not a control tool but grid management: the operator wants to know where charging stations are so it can reinforce the grid in time.

Thanks to the digital meter, Fluvius sees the consumption peaks anyway. That is why the grid operator often already knows that an unregistered charging station is installed somewhere.

Who does the obligation apply to?

The basic rule: if your charging station is not publicly available, you must register it. That applies to private individuals and to anyone with a home charging station for an electric company car.

FlandersFrom 5 kWRegister every private charging station with Fluvius.Company cars too

Brussels and WalloniaFrom 3.7 kWWith the grid operator for your area.

Public charging stationsNo need to register yourselfIf the charging station is on the official map, the operator registers it.

The blind spot: “my installer takes care of that”

This is the biggest misconception. Many people assume the installer registers the charging station automatically. That only happens if you explicitly agreed on it. Final responsibility always lies with the owner or user of the charging station.

Did your charging station come through your employer or a cafeteria plan? Then the fine is for you as the driver. Not for your employer, not for your installer.

For companies with a fleet

If your employees drive electric company cars and charge at home, every driver with a home charger is individually required to register it. Legal responsibility lies with the driver, but in practice employees often expect the company to follow this up.

As a fleet manager or business owner, it is therefore wise to actively inform your drivers about the obligation. That way you avoid an employee getting a fine for a charging station installed through the company.

Charging stations at your drivers’ homes? We give you insight into which charge points are installed, what they consume and what that costs.

Schedule a call

What you need to register in Flanders

Important to know beforehand: you cannot save an application halfway in Mijn Fluvius.
