Single-phase or three-phase connection?

If you have a single-phase connection, as in most older homes, 11 kW three-phase is not an option without modifying your fuse box.

How much do you drive per day?

Under 100 km per day, 7.4 kW or 11 kW is more than enough: one night of charging adds 60 to 110 km.

Do you have solar panels?

If you want to charge your car on solar energy during the day, you need a charger that matches the charging power to your solar surplus. Not every 11 kW charger can do that.

How to approach it: ask explicitly about PV integration. Specific models, such as Smappee or Alfen with the right configuration, can do it.

Do you want split billing with your employer?

Then your charger must be OCPP-compliant and able to connect to your employer’s management platform. Cheap chargers from the DIY store often do not qualify. Why that matters: OCPP and interoperability.

Not a good reason to choose 22 kW

“Just to be safe” or “because it is possible”. If you never notice the difference in charging time, it is wasted budget.

An 11 kW charger fully charges a car overnight. A 22 kW charger does too, just faster. That makes no difference if you sleep until morning anyway.

Also keep in mind

  • The installation cost (cable routing, earthing measurement, possibly upgrading the circuit) can be higher than the charger itself. Always ask for a total price.
  • A smart charger needs wifi or 4G at the installation location. Check this beforehand.
