The benefit in kind (BIK) on an electric company car remains favorable in 2026, but the minimum threshold has been raised and the catalog value correction changes the picture. We present three calculation scenarios.
The formula, in brief
BIK = catalog value × CO₂ coefficient × age correction × 6/7. For 100% electric vehicles, the minimum percentage applies. The annual taxable benefit can never be lower than the legal minimum (indexed to approximately €1,600/year in 2026 — please verify the current value with your accountant).
Example 1: Business owner with Tesla Model 3 (€55,000)
For a 100% electric vehicle, the CO₂ percentage falls back to the minimum. For a new vehicle, the taxable BIK amounts to approximately €1,900–€2,100 per year, depending on indexation. Compared to a similar plug-in hybrid (where the BIK quickly exceeds €3,500), the difference represents an annual net saving of €1,500–€2,000 for the business manager.
Example 2: Employee with Volkswagen ID.4 (€45,000)
Same principle, lower amount: BIK around €1,700/year. The net impact on the salary is approximately €70–€90/month, which for most employees falls well within the margin of an acceptable mobility package.
Example 3: 4-year-old second-hand EV (€28,000 catalog value when new)
The age correction applies here: the BIK decreases annually to a minimum of 70% of the new value calculation after six years. For this vehicle, the BIK in year four amounts to approximately €1,400/year. A second-hand EV as a company car remains fiscally more attractive than its market value might suggest.
What is often forgotten
The BIK concerns the vehicle, not the charging costs. Those who charge at home at the employer’s expense without a split billing arrangement risk an additional taxable benefit on the electricity. A properly implemented split billing system prevents this problem entirely.
